Agenda: Addressing human right violations of press freedom in The MENA region.
Introduction to the Committee
The United Nations Human Rights Council stands at the forefront of global efforts to protect and promote fundamental human rights. Established in 2006, the UNHRC functions as an intergovernmental body within the United Nations system, composed of 47 member states responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights across the globe. It serves as a vital platform for dialogue, where nations come together to address pressing humanitarian concerns and uphold the principles of equality, & justice. The Council plays a critical role in investigating violations, recommending policy measures, and ensuring that governments remain answerable to the universal standards of dignity and fairness. Through diplomacy and collaboration, the UNHRC continues to reaffirm the United Nations’ mission; the preservation of human rights for all.
Introduction to the Agenda
This year, the United Nations Human Rights Council will deliberate upon Addressing Human Rights Violations of Press Freedom in the MENA Region. An issue that lies at the heart of both governance and liberty. With censorship, digital surveillance, and journalist persecution on the rise, the agenda highlights the urgent need to protect freedom of expression as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. There is a delicate balance between national security and the right to free speech while proposing actionable solutions to ensure transparency, accountability, and the protection of media workers, and these discussions will reflect the very essence of what the Human Rights Council stands for.
